Annual craft festival to take place in Spiddal this weekend

An Ceardlann Spiddal Craft and Design Studios will host its third annual Féile na Ceardlainne, a free festival of art, craft, music and dance celebrating the very best of Irish craft and design, this weekend.

The two-day festival of events will take place on the Saturday and Sunday at Ceardlann, home to nine arts, craft, and design studios in Spiddal village whose members have programmed free open day workshops for people of all ages to try their hand at craft.

On Saturday events will run from 10.30am to 5pm and will include weaving demonstrations for children with traditional loom weaver, Máire Ní Thaidhg; a traditional basket making demonstration with Joe and Ciaran Hogan; throwing pots on a wheel with Martha and Rob from Sliding Rock Ceramics; a jewellery workshop for children with Sue Donnellan from Glass Art Design Studio; and salsa dancing and pinch pots with Geraldine O’Rourke.

The Sunday events will run from 1pm to 5.30pm and will include painting classes for children at Andrea Rossi’s art studio; traditional singing for adults with Batsheva Battu; badge making with An Spailpín Fánach; sword display and tai chi with Niall O Floinn; children’s willow weaving with Ciaran Hogan; and an open-air concert of live music overlooking Galway Bay.

Take a break from activities to enjoy mouthwatering food at award winning Builín Blasta Café serving delicious homemade scones, sausage rolls, pastries, pizzas, seafood chowder, fishcakes, and desserts, you might even stumble upon some music as you dine.

Celebrating 29 years in business and based at the entrance to Spiddal village, Ceardlann is a treasure trove of handmade creations by each of its design artists providing the festival workshops.
