Protesters held demonstrations at offices of the Department of Social Protection and Revenue Commissioners in Galway yesterday to voice their opposition to the Local Property Tax.
The Galway protests came as part of a nationwide day of civil disobedience organised by the Campaign Against Home and Water Taxes to coincide with May Day.
A group of some 20 protesters from the Knocknacarra area attended the Revenue Commissioners’ local office in Fairgreen at lunchtime yesterday, and spoke to staff to ask them to oppose the new tax. It is understood the doors of the office were locked while protesters queued with members of the public to voice their opposition to the payment.
“We have been giving information to the staff and asking them to support our protest by not cooperating with the tax,” explained Dette McLoughlin, a spokesperson for the group.
Earlier yesterday another group held a protest outside the dole office in St Augustine Street, where some 20 demonstrators attended and burned reminder letters from the Revenue Commissioners regarding the new property tax.
