Connemara piers get funding for maintenance works

Funding totalling €450,000 for infrastructural improvements and developments to County Galway harbours has been provided to the Galway County Council.

Four harbours are getting €112,500 each under the Fishery Harbours and Coastal Infrastructure Development Programme 2013.

The grant in Cé Glinsk, Carna, will go towards the construction of access ladders and rehabilitation works to the existing slipway; in Cé Annaghvann, Leitir Mór, and in Cé Sruthan, An Cheathrú Rua, the money is for a new quay wall, access ladders, stairwell, a safety toe railing, and mooring rings; the grant for Cé Inis Oírr, Árainn, is for rehabilitation works to the slipway.

The grants have been welcomed by Fine Gael Galway East TD Seán Kyne who said the “development and maintenance of our coastal facilities is essential if we are to continue to reap the benefits of our natural marine resources”. He added that the works needed on the piers will also provide employment for local construction companies.
