“THE WEST Ocean String quartet dazzles in its renaissance-like ability to inhabit multiple worlds simultaneously...fording rivers that don’t even appear on most musicians’ maps.”
So said The Irish Times of The West Ocean String Quartet who play the Aula Maxima at NUI Galway on Thursday April 18 at 8pm. This will be the launch concert for the quartet’s new album An Indigo Sky and proceeds on the night will go toward Voluntary Services Abroad.
The album’s title track is a four-movement suite by Neil Martin, commissioned in memory of Joseph Browne, a former NUIG medical student who died tragically in 2006. An Indigo Sky also features music by Turlough O’Carolan and Thomas Moore.
The quartet will also perform pieces from their previous albums Unwrapping Dreams (2004 ), The Guiding Moon (2006 ), and Ae Fond Kiss (2009 ). The WOSQ have also worked with Christy Moore, Matt Molloy, Maighréad Ní Dhomhnaill, Mary Black, and Liam O’Flynn.
