Labour TD for Galway West, Derek Nolan, today welcomed news from the Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton, that the fuel allowance scheme is to be extended by one week.
“Given the very bitter spell we are experiencing, the extension of the National Fuel Scheme is very welcome. Many people are concerned about the costs of heating their homes, and the 410,000 people across Ireland who receive this allowance will no doubt be relieved that the extra payment will be made automatically without having to reapply.
He said that the Fuel Allowance is paid for 26 weeks over the coldest months of the year, and yesterday’s extension means recipients will receive a further payment from the week beginning April 8. Our weather is clearly very unpredictable, and I welcome the commitment from Minister Burton to continue to monitor the situation.
“I would also urge everyone to keep in contact with elderly or sick neighbours during times of bad weather. It can be a very isolating and vulnerable time and it is important to keep a vigilant eye on them.”
