The City of the Tribes continues to live up to its reputation as the cultural heart of Ireland with more than 200 events announced as part of The Galway Gatherings 2013.
From the Aran Islands to Athenry and further afield, a gathering is planned in almost every town across the city and county. Jointly led by Galway city and county council, the announcement of The Galway Gathering as part of the Gathering Ireland 2013 was held at a reception in Aras Na Contae, Galway city, last night with a clear message emerging - Galway’s Diaspora are gathering and there is plenty of time for people to organise their own Gathering event.
The event was attended by more than 200 guests as well as Gathering organisers from across the country. Galway Gathering festival and event organisers wore attire reflective of their own event and guests were entertained by world class global event specialists Arcana, providing a stellar theatrical performance.
Recognised as a key anchor of The Gathering Ireland 2013, the Galway Gathering programme spans a variety of fields including culture, sport, food, music and heritage. Highlights throughout 2013 include: The Aquinas College Galway 40th Anniversary Reunion, October 24 to 27 - for 40 years students from the Aquinas College, Michigan, have come to Tullycross, Galway, as part of an educational programme and this October 850 past students will be invited back; The Galway Sea Festival, May 31 to June 3 - celebrating Galway’s unique maritime history and culture with a four day event incorporating surfing workshops, beach safaris, seafood trails, and traditional craft. The festival will also promote Galway as a centre of excellence on matters pertaining to energy, wind, and wave research; The Galway Cup, August 7 - the internationally renowned youth soccer tournament is inviting 50 teams from across the UK, Europe, the USA, and the Middle East to participate in a sports gathering as part of The Gathering Ireland 2013 celebrations; The Ballinasloe Heritage Week Gathering, October 2013 - Ballinasloe will host a series of themed events across the month including a week dedicated to reunions, a heritage week and culture and sport week; The gathering 2013 Hurling Tournament - 16 hurling teams from overseas will play games in in Athenry, Gort, Loughrea, and Galway city, and more than 350 overseas visitors are expected to participate.
