The nine to five spring makeover

From the power dress to the statement jacket and interesting separates, spring workwear has a smarter and more interesting feel this spring. Flattering silhouettes and wearable key pieces can be matched with your current wardrobe to update it.

The statement jacket is the piece of the season, and an item worth investing in. Whether a tuxedo style, or a strong shoulder style, a tweed jacket, or a belted cover up, it will suit your work look and off duty wear. A good statement jacket in a flattering shape and colour can really go a long way and you can use it with the clothes you have in your wardrobe. A|wear has this cream tuxedo style jacket that can be worn over a plain dress and with a printed scarf and grey heels for a stylish work look. For a softer, more casual look, wear it with a pussy bow printed blouse tucked inside this pair of tailored slim trousers.

A great dress is always a style winner for the office. This season, forget about safe style, it is the illusion dress that will create a powerful impact. Smartly designed with side or front block colour panels to enhance and flatter most shapes, it also comes with clever ruching on the waist to accentuate or camouflage the tummy area, and the knee length makes it a key office piece. Fran & Jane at The Hidden Closet in Tuam has this fabulous block coloured dress that also comes in mint blue. Wear it on its own with heels, or choose a trench or blazer for a smart cover up. At night, glam it up with black patent heels and clutch and add some sparkle with diamanté earrings.

Flared or slim, tailored pants are very much loved by designers this season, but not in black. Lighter shades and interesting subtle patterns make great work separates. Think about soft abstract prints, slim trousers paired with a plain chiffon blouse and kitten heels, or a lighter neutral shade worn with bright colour shirt or blouse and patent wedges or heels. The key is to keep it smart and team a tailored piece with a softer separate and coordinate your colours.
