Galway’s premier rowing event, the annual Head of the River, takes place on Saturday next, March 16.
Celebrating its 34th year, the Galway Head of the River traditionally signals the end of the winter training period and the beginning of the regatta season.
A favourite of both local and visiting crews, this year’s event will be sponsored by Boston Scientific.
As always, boats race against each other and the time clock over the three mile course, which startsat ‘the cut’ which is at the mouth of the Corrib and finishes under the Quincentennial Bridge.
Three hundred boats take part in the three events which start at 10am, 1.30pm, and 4pm.
Gillian Carolan, president of co-hosts Tribesmen Rowing Club, is encourages members of the public to view this event from the banks of the Corrib River.
“Rowing is a sport of endurance, strength and finesse and we have a proud rowing tradition in the City of the Tribes. This event, now in its 34th year, is recognised as one of the premier rowing events in the Irish calendar.”
Prize giving takes place in the University Bar from 6pm and a post-event gig takes place in the Roisin Dubh from 8pm.
