TWO EXHIBITIONS open this weekend, one in the Galway Arts Centre, featuring short films, the other in The Shed at the docks, featuring large-scale works.
The Observer & I
The Observer & I, by collaborative duo Kevin Gaffney and Sally-Anne Kelly, opens in the Galway Arts Centre tomorrow at 6pm. The duo’s work in the still and moving image is concerned with the presentation, manipulation, and re-creation of the self.
The exhibition will present three films and three series of slide photographs.
The Moonless Ocean is a short film which uses baths, pools, and the sea as motifs in which the psychology of the characters become physicalised.
The Observer & I is set in the derelict remains of a hotel complex from the 1970s, resembling the set of a disaster movie, at odds with the landscape surrounding it. Being in the Twofold World, sees a group of characters inhabit a disused communist bathhouse in Prague, while the ringing telephones signal an impending horror which never materialises.
Expanded Draught
A large scale exhibition by the international artist collective Expanded Draught opens in The Shed, Docks Road, this Saturday at 7pm, and features work by 20 artists, nine of whom are Irish and 11 are from the USA and Korea.
The theme of the show is ‘If you cut through the present the Future leaks out’ and will feature large scale individual and collaborative works, and interactive and inclusive projects using both unconventional and conventional spaces.
Expanded Draught is an international artist collective founded in Galway by Allison Regan and Joanne Dolan in 2006. The exhibition is facilitated by the Adapt Galway coalition of local visual arts organisations.
On Monday March 11, Expanded Draught will hold an artist talk in the Cluain Mhuire Campus, GMIT, at 1pm in the White Room, and a collaborative workshop called CO-LAB LAB from 1pm to 5pm.
