Galwegians prepare to defend title against Monivea

Galwegians have made it through to their second Heineken Cup final in a row following a decisive 19-0 victory over Gort in Crowley Park on Sunday.

The city side will now defend its title in this year’s final on Easter Sunday in the Sportsground where they will face Monivea, who defeated Castlebar in the other semi-final.

Galwegians were firm favourites for this tie, but it was the visitors who almost opened the scoring when intercepting an attempted pass out of defence. However a superb tackle by fullback Ronan Burke prevented a Gort try and Wegians cleared the danger through their dominant scrum.

Wegians opened with a try from centre Matt Dever, and the home side’s domination was rewarded when wing Ronan Moore crossed in the corner for a 12-0.

Gort tried to power their way back into the game, but a solid Wegian defence kept them scoreless for the rest of the half.

The second half became a fractious affair with three sinbinnings and a red card. A yellow for both sides after six minutes set the tone and it was not until the 56th minute that Wegians stretched their lead when their scrum allowed scrumhalf Conor O'Rourke to snipe over under the posts. That was the last score, as the game petered out after another yellow card for Wegians and a red for Gort.
