A memorial vigil in honour of the women who were in the Mercy Magdalene Laundry in Galway city takes place this Sunday.
The vigil will take place at the ‘Women of the Magdalene laundry’ memorial statue, Forster Street, at 3.30pm. Those coming along are asked to bring flowers or candles.
The playwright Patricia Burke Brogan, whose play Eclipsed depicted the lives of the women cast into these institutions, will perform a reading from her work; Independent city councillor Catherine Connolly will give a short address as Gealige and in English; while Treasa Ní Cheannabhain will perform a number of songs.
The vigil is supported by Galway Debt Justice, Galway Pro-Choice, and Women in Media and Entertainment.
