Massachusetts military company to join St Patrick’s Day Parade

The Ancient and Honourable Artillery Company of Massachusetts are coming to Galway to march in the city’s St Patrick’s Day Parade.

Chartered by the Massachusetts legislature in 1638, the AHAC of Massachusetts is the oldest military company in the western world. It has its headquarters at Faneuil Hall, Boston. The hall’s famous grasshopper weathervane played an important role in identifying British spies during the American War of Independence.

Twice in the past 15 years, a company contingent has travelled to Galway to march in the St Patrick’s Day Parade. This year, the contingent will have 40 members led by Captain Paul Colella.

The parade takes place on Sunday March 17 and the parade organisers are welcoming applications from community initiatives and theatre, band, performance, dance, music, sport, youth, carnival, and vintage car groups.

The theme for this year’s parade is the ‘History of Galway’. It is also part of The Gathering Ireland 2013. Anyone related to, or bearing the surname of, one of the Tribes of Galway is invited to the city for the weekend.
