Two men charged in connection with driving a stolen vehicle and leading gardai on a high speed car chase from Galway city as far as Letterfrack have been remanded in custody.
The two men were brought in custody before Judge Mary Fahy at Galway District Court on Tuesday.
Jason Barry (38 ) with an address at Tone Avenue, Mervue, and 83 O’Connell’s Avenue, Listowel, Kerry, is charged with taking possession of a car without the consent of the owner or lawful authority at 7 An Gleann, Killarney Road, Macroom, Cork, on February 3 last, as well as failure to stop when required to do so by a garda at Murragh Avenue, Renmore, three counts of dangerous driving at Moneenageisha, Merchants Road, and Newcastle Road/Quincentennial Bridge, Galway, resisting Garda David Foley, a peace officer acting in his duty, at Letterfrack, Galway, and failure to give a breath sample at Galway Garda Station, on February 4.
Nineteen-year-old Kris Lynam with an address at 29 Leac Liath, Barna, is charged with resisting Garda David Murphy at Letterfrack and unauthorised carriage in a stolen vehicle on February 4.
In relation to Lynam, Garda Murphy told the court that the accused gave no reply after charge and caution. He added that there would be an objection to bail due to the nature of the charge and that there is a possibility of further charges.
Judge Fahy refused bail and remanded Lynam in custody to appear before Harristown District Court tomorrow, February 8, for DPP directions and possible further charges.
Garda Foley told the court that after charge and caution Barry replied to one charge: “I wasn’t driving, Garda”. He gave no reply in relation to the other charges.
Defence solicitor Sean Acton said that no application would be made for bail at this time and Judge Fahy remanded Barry in custody by consent to appear at Harristown District Court on February 8 for DPP directions. Legal aid was also granted.
