Éamon de Buitléar’s contribution to Irish society “has enriched the lives of many generations” according to NUI Galway president Dr Jim Browne.
Dr Browne was speaking following the passing this week of Mr de Buitléar, an outstanding film-maker, environmentalist, intellectual, author, and musician. Mr de Buitléar also recently donated his multi-media, bi-lingual archive to the university.
“He was a man of many parts,” said Dr Browne. “Most of us can recall Éamon’s passion for the Irish environment, brought to life through his books and television programmes. His enduring legacy will be a sense of respect for the landscape and heritage of Ireland, along with a joyful enthusiasm for the culture and traditions of our nation.”
Speaking about Mr de Buitléar’s archive, Dr Browne said: “His decision to donate his archive to the university will mean his lifetime’s work of creativity and advocacy will be held in trust here for the nation and for generations of scholars.”
