City assault accused sent forward for trial

A 24-year-old man has been sent forward for trial in relation to a serious assault which occurred in the city centre on Christmas Eve more than two years ago.

Shannon Walsh, with an address at 3 Mount Carmel, 216 Upper Salthill, was brought in custody before Galway District Court charged with allegedly assaulting a man causing him harm at Frenchville Lane, Eyre Square, on December 24, 2012, contrary to Section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

Detective Garda John Maloney gave evidence of charging the accused man on the morning of the court and serving him with the book of evidence.

Inspector Ernie Whyte then informed the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions has consented to the man being sent forward for trial to Galway Circuit Criminal Court on February 19 next.

After giving what is known as the alibi warning, Judge Mary Fahy further remanded Walsh in custody.
