City woman jailed for burglary and theft attempt

A young Bohermore woman who stole more than €2,800 worth of cosmetics and other goods from city business premises, as well as being involved in a burglary attempt, was sentenced to 14 months in jail at Galway District Court this week.

Gemma Ridgard (21 ) of 11 St Finbarr’s Terrace, Bohermore, appeared before Judge Mary Fahy at Monday’s court sitting charged with stealing eight items of cosmectics/perfume to the value of €452.50 on September 18, 2012, and 30 items of cosmectics/perfume valued at €2,193.90 on September 26, 2012, at University Pharmacy, Newcastle Road.

Ridgard was also charged with stealing nine Yankie candles valued at €135 at Mr Price, Unit 3, West City, Newcastle, on October 26, 2012, failing to appear in court on December 3, 2012, and stealing three door handles and one shower hose to the value of €90.66 at Woodies DIY on January 20, 2013. There were further charges of being in possession of two screwdrivers, one long and one short, with the intention of using them in a burglary and entering the curtilage of a building as a trespasser with intent to commit an offence at a house in Hazel Park on October 7, 2012.

Judge Fahy convicted Ridgard and sentenced her to a total of 14 months in jail. Free legal aid was also granted.
