FOR THE past 30 years, as a member of Sonic Youth, Thurston Moore has been one of the key and iconic figures in alternative rock, and next week he plays Galway.
Thurston Moore, accompanied by John Moloney, plays Strange Brew at the Róisín Dubh on Thursday January 17 at 9pm.
Through albums such as Daydream Nation (1988 ), Goo (1990 ), and Dirty (1992 ), New York based Sonic Youth established themselves as the world’s premiere art-rock/alternative rock band, mixing abrasive guitars, experimental textures, thought provoking subject matter, and imagination. Moore’s guitar playing has earned wide respect with Rolling Stone including him in its 100 greatest guitarists of all time list.
With Sonic Youth on “indefinite hiatus” since 2011, Moore, who is originally from Florida, has been working on a variety of solo and collaborative projects. In 2011, Moore released his third solo album, Demolished Thoughts, of which Pitchfork said: “A lot of people retire after 30 years, but Moore has added another great line to an overwhelming résumé”.
Throughout spring of last year, Moore and drummer John Moloney recorded songs at various shows and released them as Caught On Tape. Expect the pair to unleash some serious avant-rock - and perhaps a few other tracks from the man’s vast discography.
Outside of music, Moore has also narrated documentaries for the National Geographic Channel, such as Inside: Straight Edge and the Hard Time series about life in prison.
