All that glitters

In 2001, Mariah Carey was in an awful film called Glitter. Now, thankfully, the must-have party trend for this year (of glitter and all things sparkly ), is a lot better than the film, which I believe was not exactly a success at the box office. Adding a hint of shine here and there to your outfit will never be easier as the high street shops and boutiques embrace this look with open arms, and let’s be honest, our eyes tend to be drawn to something shiny. Taking inspiration from a floor length Dolce and Gabbana dress, sequins are really flattering to wear, shorts and minis are the key statement piece and naturally shoes and accessories are where we can have a little fun.

Something a little formal

Many a Hollywood starlet has swanned down a red carpet in full length, head-to-toe, sequins. You might think that this is somewhat over the top, but actually it is a popular formal look for the winter. Labels such as French Connection and Misguided are using these pieces as key party looks in a range of colours from silver to green. Such a look can be styled in a very chic way and then changed to look more edgy depending on where your night is taking you. For all out glam, match up with some black stiletto heels, a plain clutch bag, and your hair loosely pinned up (full length sequin gown, £59, misguided.co.uk ). To get more funky, try a leather jacket over it and wear your hair in loose curls (add some extensions for some fun ).

Make a statement

I am really loving the selection of mini skirts and shorts hitting the shop floors. If you prefer to add some colour or just a hint of bling to your outfit, then wearing just one sparkly piece is the way forward. Worn with black opaque tights and a plain top, sequinned or embellished shorts are a super alternative look to a party dress (embroidered shorts from a selection at River Island ). You can also swap this look around and wear the sparkle on top under a blazer (sequin top, €45, Dunne’s Stores ).

Accessories are made for having fun

Now I have talked a lot about accessories of all shapes and sizes, but having a selection of costume jewellery to choose from is essential approaching Christmas. I am a huge fan of American label Alex and Ani, which makes eco friendly and affordable jewellery and is currently available in Arnotts, Dublin. Pieces start from just €26 and add a touch of class to any outfit. Oh, and they make gorgeous gifts too! Staying with the bling, Thomas Sabo has a huge selection of pieces for partywear. Sabo pieces are more expensive, but are a great investment. If you just want to add a little fun to your look, try a headpiece. Accessorize has a huge selection of embellished hairbands, clips, and bobbins to make your tresses look trendy.

And not forgetting my favourite part…

The shoes

My bridesmaids wore the most amazing sequin shoes in gold and black and they attracted so many flattering comments. One of the reasons I went for a statement shoe was simply because they were an investment. Worn with a little black dress, shoes with plenty of sparkle will have you party-ready in no time (shoes from a selection at Coast ).
