Galway masters in All-Ireland final

The Galway Masters (over 40s ) will face Cavan in the All-Ireland final at the Sligo Institute of Technology grounds on Saturday (2pm ).

Cavan and Galway met previously in the group stages and finished level, ensuring Saturday's final promises to be a tight encounter.

The Galway Master footballers advanced to the final after overoming neighbours Mayo by 1-08 to 0-9. The game's only goal came in the first minute from former Salthill-Knocknacarra and NUIG star Conor McGauren.

First-half points from David Cronin, James Reilly, Tom Corbett and McGauren again had Galway 1-4 to 0 -5 ahead at the interval.

Mayo levelled matters going into the last 10 minutes, but Kieran Kelly replied to edge Galway in front.

Galway finished as worthy winners following a super score that began in their own full-back line and was finished when Declan Byrne set up Brian Walsh who punched the insurance score.

Galway are captained this year by Seamus O’Ráinne.
