Leading Irish psychiatrist to speak in Galway

Professor Ivor Browne, one of Ireland’s leading psychiatrists, is coming to Galway this Monday to give a public lecture in the Galway Bay Hotel at 7.30pm.

Prof Browne’s talk is entitled Miracles of Human Transformation and will also serve as a book launch for The Divine Spark by Galwegian Claire Gormley, about the author’s attempts to overcome addiction and confusion and how an experience in Istanbul in 1999, transformed her life.

Speaking about the book, Prof Browne said: “This is a remarkable book. It is short, simple, easy to read, yet so profound. As I read, I could immediately think of half a dozen people who have reached a point of desperation, that I would want to give it to. In my talk I want to explore the subject of how it might be possible for distressed people to restore a sense of meaning and purpose in their lives.”

Claire recently set up a foundation – The Divine Spark Project – and proceeds from the sale of her book will go towards her vision of creating a model self-sustaining community base to foster ecological, social and spiritual values. See www.thedivinesparkproject.com Prof Browne was the chief psychiatrist of the Eastern Health Board and professor of psychiatry in UCD. He was also medical superintendent of Grangegorman Mental Hospital and established the Irish Foundation for Human Development. He is the author of the memoir Music and Madness.

Admission to the talk is free and all are welcome.
