Ancient Irish sea tales set in Galway

Irish folk tales concerning sea voyages are often set on the west coast of Ireland, particularly from places like Kinvara and The Aran Islands.

A public talk, hosted by the Galway Archaeological and Historical Society, will take place next week looking at these stories and why County Galway features prominently.

The Medieval Irish immram and the West of Ireland will be given by NUI Galway’s Prof Máirín Ní Dhonnchadha in the Harbour Hotel, Dock Road, next Monday at 8pm.

Immram is the name for the genre of the mediaeval Irish voyage tale where seafarers set out on perilous journeys across the Atlantic, often starting from Inis Mór or Kinvara. In this talk, Prof Ní Dhonnchadha will discuss who wrote these stories, for what audience, how did the reality of seafaring in the west of Ireland intersect with these narratives, what is their modern legacy. All are welcome. For more information see www.gahs.info
