Greenfields on song

Last weekend was a busy one for Greenfields Hockey Club. Having received a bye from Fermoy in the Irish Hockey Trophy first round they took the opportunity to grab some points in the Connacht Senior League.

Greenfields Hockey Club ladies grabbed another two wins over the weekend in this year’s Connacht Senior League.

With a bye from Fermoy in the Irish Hockey Trophy first round, Greenfields first team lined out against their seconds on Saturday, and came out 3-1 winners.

The back line of Meghan Forde, Susan Tierney, Ciara Redden and Kelly Dunleavey, all of whom are still under 16, dealt well with consistent pressure from the firsts’ attackers, but the pressure finally told when a short corner strike from Mary Healy took a deflection to leave them one goal ahead at half time. A super strike from Alice Meagher from a short corner increased the lead midway through the second half before the seconds grabbed a well-deserved goal from Rebecca Gilligan after hard work by midfielders Eli Noone, Anna Boyce and Becky Anderson. And although Sorcha Minihan created a number of chances before the end, the firsts took the points on a 3–1 scoreline.

The following day Greenfields 1sts took on a well-drilled Galway 2nds team that made them work hard for their victory.

Greenfields started strongly, winning a short corner in the first 20 seconds of the games, but Galway defended well throughout. Greenfields’ first goal came from an excellent deflection from Rachel Wyer off a short corner, but Galway’s Catherine Clancy and Niamh Johnston continued to deal well with the pressure from Greenfield’s forwards Trish Garrett and Becky Anderson.

However Greenfields confirmed their superiority late in the second half when Neasa McGettigan rounded a few players from a short corner and her shot gave the Galwaykeeper Ailbhe Nally no chance. Some excellent saves from Nally kept Galway in the game, but Greenfields finally ran out winners by 2-0.
