A row has broken out among city councillors over a proposal to rename an area in Mervue, after the late former mayor of Galway, Bridie O’Flaherty.
There is confusion among councillors as to which park in the area is proposed for renaming. There are concerns that the renaming is being proposed for O’Sullivan Park and councillors Declan McDonnell and Michael J Crowe have come out against any suggestion that this name should change.
This park is called after the late Jimmy O’Sullivan who was a major figure in developing soccer in Mervue, and more broadly, Galway city.
However councillors Pádraig Conneely and Ollie Crowe have sought to end the confusion by saying the proposal is for Fahy’s Field to be renamed Bridie O’Flaherty Park and does not involve any renaming of O’Sullivan Park.
“At no point did we call for the renaming of O’Sullivan Park,” said Cllr Crowe. “Our proposal related to Fahy’s Field as per the city council report, Tobin Consultancy report and indeed Mervue Utd’s own report.”
Cllr Crowe went on to say: “The pitches adjacent to Thermo King are rightfully named after the late Jimmy O’Sullivan and the last thing either Cllr Conneely or I would seek to do is remove his name from these pitches.”
