Art auction to raise funds for Galway Hospice

More than 100 artworks by some of Ireland’s leading contemporary artists, such as John Behan, Joe Boske, and Maria Van Kampen, will go ‘under the hammer’ for charity this weekend.

Galway artist Sharon O’Malley has organised this art auction, which takes place this Sunday in the Salthill Hotel. All proceeds from the auction will go to the Galway Hospice. The auctioneer for the event will be Colm O’Donnellan of O’Donnellan and Joyce. The viewing take place from 3pm to 7pm with the auction running from 7pm to 9pm.

The artworks donated include pieces by John Behan, Joe Boske, Debi O’Hehir, Sharon O’Malley, Ruth McHugh, Pat Comer, Ger Sweeney, Kathleen Furey, Maria Van Kampen and Jennifer Cunningham.

As she battles with serious illness herself, Sharon is overwhelmed with the support she has got from fellow artists and friends, and in particular to the Norman Villa Gallery.

“This is truly an unmissable opportunity in Galway to get an artwork from some of Ireland’s finest artists, and in aid of a really good cause,” she said.

Sharon O’Malley has been to the forefront of visual arts in Galway since the early nineties. She is a founder member of Artspace Studios. Some of her paintings have become posters for Cúirt and the Galway Arts Festival.

Sharon has been battling serious illness for some time now, but it has not held her back. In August the Galway Arts Centre hosted a major retrospective to honour the artist and highlight her contribution to the visual arts in the city and county.

Admission is free and the Gourmet Tart Company will be serving tarts. There will also be a complimentary glass of wine for all attendees along with musical entertainment.
