Galway rowers are swapping their oars for bicycles in a bid to raise funds for the club and Galway charity Ability West.
Galway Rowing Club’s first 50km sponsored cycle will take place on Sunday December 2 to enable the club to purchase 10 sets of sculling oars for the large numbers of youngsters in training, while also helping Ability West continue providing services and support for people with intellectual disability.
The route for the club’s cycle, which departs Dangan Sports Centre, passes through Moycullen, Oughterard, Rossaveal, Spiddal, and Barna before returning to the city.
Club president Paddy Lally and captain Fergal Diviney are asking all club members to get behind this first sponsored cycle.
“We are urging our athletes to get their bikes in order, their sponsorship cards filled, and to go out and enjoy the whole event.”
A number of veteran rowers and former members have signed up for the cycle, and Paddy Lally is asking any person with a connection to the club to help out “either by giving a small donation or getting on the bike”.
