It has been announced that Mr Lars Frisell, director of economics at the Central Bank of Ireland, will be the guest speaker at the upcoming Paddy Ryan Memorial Lecture in GMIT. The special lecture, which will be held on Tuesday December 11 in Theatre 1000, will recognise Paddy Ryan’s role as former mayor and alderman of Galway City, and honorary memory of the Galway Chamber. As part of the Amicable Society he welcomed President John Fitzgerald Kennedy to Galway during his tenure.
The Paddy Ryan Memorial Lecture was initiated by the Galway Chamber in
association with the two third level colleges in Galway, NUI Galway, and GMIT. Mr Ryan was born in Shop Street in 1920. In conjunction with the functions he performed as the Alderman and in the Galway Chamber, he also held a doctor of law degree from NUI Galway as well as being the chairman of the Galway Races committee, oyster festival, rotary club, and Tidy Towns.
Following on from the commemorative lecture, Mr Frisell will be presented with a specially commissioned medallion designed by artist and sculptor Padraic Reany. Announcing details of the public lecture today, GMIT President Michael
Carmody says: “GMIT is very pleased to host the Paddy Ryan Memorial
Lecture as part of our 40th anniversary celebrations. I would like to
invite all member of the public to attend this event to hear Mr Frisell
deliver what I am sure will be a very stimulating lecture on the
situation facing the Irish economy.”
