VILLAGERS, LED by the gifted songwriter Conor O’Brien, play The Seapoint Ballroom, Salthill, on March 14.
This ‘Róisín Dubh presents...’ show is part of a nationwide tour in support of their highly anticipated second album {Awayland} to be released on Friday January 11.
Speaking about the album, O’Brien said: “I tried to write everything from the perspective of a newborn baby; given the gift of language, what would he or she say? For a while I thought the record would be called Birth, and the album cover is an image of a little boy looking out to sea. The album is about reclaiming that sense of curiosity and wonder which we have when we are children and we often lose over the years.”
As well as guitar based songs, there will be instrumental music, Krautrock, funk music, and electronica.
“I felt like I was reintroduced to electronic music in the last year and a half,” he says. “When I was a teenager I was obsessed Aphex Twin, Portishead, ADF, Tricky and Björk.”
O’Brien also cites this album as being much more of a band effort then the acclaimed debut, Becoming A Jackal.
“The first record is a strong album, but with this I can feel how much it has benefited from the band being involved,” he said. “I think I was attracted to being emotionally gratified by something that was less about the expression of the individual ego, and more about the textural sensation of having a collective experience.”
Tickets go on sale tomorrow at 9am and will be available through www.roisindubh.net, from the Ticket Desk at OMG, Shop Street (formerly Zhivago ), and The Róisín Dubh.
