City to host public forum on osteoarthritis

NUI, Galway will host a public forum on osteoarthritis in The g hotel conference centre on Tuesday December 9 at 7.30pm.

The Regenerative Medicine Institute, NUIG has assembled a distinguished panel of speakers to partake in a free public forum meeting on osteoarthritis. The disease is a major focus of the research effort at REMEDI.

Participating panel members at Tuesday’s conference will be Philip Gleeson, Arthritis Ireland and a patient battling early-onset arthritis; Dr Drew Burdon, Smith & Nephew, Britain, a global medical technology company specialist who will highlight several new treatments for osteoarthritis; Prof Frank Barry, REMEDI, an adult stem cell expert with a research focus on cellular therapy for osteoarthritis; and Bill Curtin, an orthopaedic surgeon at Galway University Hospital.

The forum has also been endorsed by leading Irish sporting personalities Pat Spillane and Gary O’Toole. Former Kerry GAA great Pat Spillane is currently suffering from severe osteoarthritis while former Irish Olympic swimmer Gary O’Toole is now a consultant orthopaedic surgeon.

Both have given interviews about their respective experiences with osteoarthritis and both interviews will be exclusively screened during the REMEDI forum.
