Today is the start of Movember

Grow a moustache and help support men’s health

Many great men have sported moustaches - Albert Einstein, Friedrich Engels, Ghandi, Salvador Dalí, Freddie Mercury, Friedrich Nietzsche - and Galwaymen have a chance to join their ranks this month.

Today is November 1 which means it is the start of Movember, the month long international charity event where men grow moustaches to raise funds for and awareness of prostrate cancer and men’s health issues.

Participants, known as ‘Mo Bros’, can from today, register at Movember.com andhave the remainder of the month to become purveyors of a fine moustache. All the money raised in Ireland goes directly to the Irish Cancer Society’s initiative, Action Prostate Cancer.

Movember is not just for the boys. Women can get in on the action by taking on the role as a ‘Mo Sista’ for the month and encouraging the men in their life to grow the mo.

Irish Mo Bros this year will include Irish rugby international players Jamie Heaslip and Cian Healy, Italia 90 stars Ray Houghton, Packie Bonner, and Tony Cascarino, as well as many GAA clubs.

At the end of the month, Mo Bros and Sistas celebrate the Movember journey with Movember parties or attending one of the gala parties held in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Sligo, and around the world.

More than 2,500 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in Ireland each year. However last year 15,500 Mo Bros and Sistas raised more than €1.7 million for men’s health in Ireland with some 854,000 Mo Bros and Sistas raising €92.4 million worldwide.

Movember’s Global Action Plan (GAP ) aims to accelerate prostate cancer outcomes by bringing together the best researchers from around the world. GAP facilitates a new and unprecedented level of global research collaboration, not previously seen within the prostate cancer community.
