Disruption expected as roadworks begin

Roadworks in the vicinity of the Fire Station on Fr Griffin Road at the junction with Fairhill Road are to start next Monday.

The Galway City Council say the work is “essential” and will see the upgrading of both the road surface and traffic safety measures in the area. It is expected that the works will be complete within a week.

This week saw the start of other roadworks with road maintenance on Headford Road and new traffic calming measures for Claddagh Quay and Grattan Road.

The work on Headford Road extends from Walsh’s Terrace to the entrance of The Plaza (Lidl/Argos ) and will consist of planing-off of the existing road surface and resurfacing the roadway.

This will include the junction of Bothar na mBan, Headford Road, and Dyke Road and the junction of St Bridget’s Place (aka Hidden Valley ), Headford Road, and the Dyke Road slip-road. It also includes from Headford Road/Dyke Road junction to Brendan’s Avenue and car park at rear of County Buildings. The works will take one week and are scheduled to coincide with the schools’ mid-term break.

There will be disruption to traffic at various times and some temporary local diversions will be in place at times until the completion the work.

The new traffic calming measures for Claddagh Quay and Grattan Road currently being installed will see restricted access via Grattan Road, and Claddagh Quay to through traffic between the city centre and Salthill while maintaining local access for residents. Appropriate signage will be put in place.

Work will include new and upgraded footpaths and pedestrian facilities at Claddagh Quay, beside the Claddagh Hall, along Frenchville and Grattan Road and the introduction of new ‘mini-roundabouts’ at Claddagh Avenue, Grattan Park, and Beach Court.

The Galway City Council has “apologised for any inconvenience caused while these improvements are being put in place” and is advising the public to see www.galwaycity.ie for more details.
