THE 18TH Junior Galway Film Fleadh returns next week with a host of exciting workshops for children and teens in Stop Motion, Special FX, and Pixilation, as well as a screening of the French film Le Gamin Au Vélo.
Le Gamin Au Vélo
Le Gamin Au Vélo (The Kid With A Bike ) will be screened on Thursday November 8 at 12 noon in the Town Hall Theatre. It tells the story of 12-year-old Cyril, a boy in foster care, searching for his father and lost bike.
Cyril escapes the foster home to try to find his father at his old apartment but it is abandoned and he is convinced his father has abandoned him. The next morning a woman called Samantha shows up with Cyril’s bike and so begins a series of events whereby Cyril tracks down his father, but this only leads to a host of complicated and difficult trials for the young boy. Jonathan Romney in Screen Daily said Le Gamin Au Vélo is “one of the best films about childhood since Kes”.
Workshops
Edith Pieperhoff’s Stop Motion Workshops (for ages nine plus ) will introduce participants to the art of animation. They can learn to create their own super hero or evil villain and direct a short sketch staring their own creations. Materials will be provided.
Special FX Make-up Workshop will cater for those who love vampires, zombies, ghouls, and ghosts. The class will teach participants how to create all kinds of gory special effects (blood, scars, monster make-up, and more, ).
The Pixilation Workshop centres on an animation technique that uses the body. In this animation workshop, you are the drawing. Just change your pose slightly from one photo frame to the next and you can float, fly around a room, ice skate, disappear, and reappear in a different location.
Presenting for TV with TG4 is an opportunity for young people to learn the necessary skills to be a television presenter. Caroline Ní Dhubhchóin has worked as a director, producer, and presenter with TG4 and RTÉ and she will host this workshop where students will be given the opportunity to learn how to script, interview, and present short pieces to camera.
The fleadh will also host a panel discussion entitled The Long And The Shorts Of It, which will shed light on the various skills needed to make a short film and what to do with it afterwards. Areas covered include equipment, crewing, funding, festivals, distribution, and many more.
The panel will be moderated by Keith Walsh (director ) and will include Fran Keaveney (ex Irish Filmboard Shorts executive ), Keith Bogue (producer ), Thomas Hefferon (director, screenwriter ), and Dean Gilchrist (IADT student filmmaker ).
The Junior Galway Film Fleadh takes place from next Wednesday to Saturday November 10. Places are limited on the workshops. For more information and bookings call 091 - 562200, email [email protected], or see www.galwayfilmfleadh.com
