PRETTY PICTURES is the title of a new exhibition by Dean Kelly and Shane Crotty which opens tomorrow at 6pm in The Kenny Gallery in the Liosbán Retail Park, Tuam Road.
Dean Kelly’s paintings and photographs in this exhibition mark a shift in his work. Gone is much of the layered graphic, and to the fore is pure painting. The painter Alice Maher had told Kelly she could see that as a young artist, he felt he needed to “say everything with every single piece”. She assured him that the affliction of applying an encyclopaedic method eases with time. So now Kelly has ‘de-cluttered’ his work to produce spontaneous and instinctive of local places.
Shane Crotty’s work, through monoprint, intaglio, digital print, and photography, deals with the transforming effects that tragedy can bring about, where violence and darkness walk hand in hand with love and kindness. The subject matter and imagery include Croagh Patrick, Brighton Pier, Auschwitz, cemeteries, and war memorials.
The guest speaker is artist and actor Páraic Breathnach. All are welcome to the launch.
