Siobhan McKenna Road bottle bank is an ‘ugly eyesore’

Residents are fed up with the overflowing bottle bank and abandoned rubbish at Siobhan McKenna Road which has now become an “ugly eyesore” according to city councillor Padraig Conneely who has called for immediate action to be taken.

The Fine Gael councillor said this week that the temporary bottle bank on this stretch of road has become a “dumping ground with hundreds of bottles, cans, and other rubbish being left beside the bottle bank”.

Cllr Conneely further explained: “The bottle bank was moved from Bothar Le Ceile to facilitate the Seamus Quirke Road project to the temporary location at Siobhan McKenna Road. The bottle bank has now become a free for all with cars coming from other areas of the city to dump their bottles and rubbish beside the bottle bank. Over the weekend the area was like a dumping tip.”

Lack of CCTV in the area has been cited as a contributing factor to the relentless dumping as it is very difficult to identify and possibly fine the culprits. Cllr Conneely has called for “immediate steps to be taken to re-locate the bottle bank which is the cause of annoyance to the residents of Innishanagh Park and Greenview Heights”.

It is understood that Cllr Conneely and local residents have organised a meeting with city officials this week to discuss the issue.
