Six Galway people made settlements totalling almost €750,000 between July and September of this year, according to the latest tax defaulters’ list released this week by the Revenue Commissioners.
The largest settlement made in the county came from Martin Browne, a retired farmer from Bullaun, Loughrea, arising from underdeclaration of income tax and investigations into offshore assets, bogus non-resident account, and single premium insurance products cases.
Mr Browne’s settlement, totalling €511,125, comprised a total of €351,298 in interests and penalties.
Nationally, 111 individuals made settlements totalling €24.3 million during the third quarter of the year.
The quarterly settlements bulletin lists those audit settlements where the Revenue Commissioners accepted a settlement of more than €12,700 (or €30,000 for some investigations ), including tax, interests, and penalties, instead of instituting proceedings for the recovery of the penalties. People who made voluntary disclosures prior to the beginning of an audit, or who paid fines and penalties amounting to less than 15 per cent of the tax due, are not included in the list.
