A man arrested in connection with an altercation near a city centre pub, which may have led to the death of a Corrandulla man, was released from custody without charge last Thursday.
A file is now being prepared and will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP ).
Gardai in Galway launched an investigation after the body of 35-year-old John Walsh, from Ballybeg, Corrandulla, was found drowned in his bath at his home at approximately 12.30am on Thursday, July 24.
Gardai preserved the scene for technical examination and a post-mortem examination was carried out that day by State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, at University Hospital Galway. It was revealed that the late Mr Walsh had died from drowning but that he had also suffered an internal head injury which could have been a contributory factor in his death.
Gardai have confirmed that they are investigating a possible link with an altercation in Abbeygate Street, near Sally Longs public house at around midnight the previous Saturday, July 19. It is believed that the deceased had been involved in the altercation in which he received an injury to the head.
At around 4pm last Thursday gardai arrested a man in his mid-20s in relation to an offence under Section 3 of the Non Fatal Offence Against the Persons Act. He was then detained at Mill Street Garda Station, under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, for a number of hours before being released later that same evening.
Gardai are continuing their appeal for witnesses and have asked for anyone who may have been in the vicinity of Abbeygate Street Upper and the junction with Bowling Green on Saturday, July 19, from between midnight and 12.30am to contact Mill Street Garda Station on the special incident room number of 091-538070 or at the main desk on 091-538000.
