This Saturday and Sunday sees the last of the club football down for decision for 2008.
At the football board AGM on Monday night, which was splendidly organised and conducted, county board secretary Seamus O’Grady acknowledged that in an ideal world the league finals would have been played three weekends ago.
However a combination of bad weather over a few weekends and the fact that Finian Hanley and Michael Meehan were on international duty with Ireland down under, held things up slightly.
That said there was a general consensus at that meeting that in 2009 clubs should not request postponements unless absolutely and utterly necessary.
If clubs avoided personal agendas and supported the board in sticking to the fixture schedule in 2009, there was no reason why a close season for club footballers could not be held in November and December such as the one for their county brethren.
For that to happen, clubs needed to try to stick as rigidly to the 2009 fixture booklet as possible.
As O’Grady pointed: “It is not in the board’s interest nor do they desire to call off games as it invariably leads to a backlog later in the year.”
This Saturday and Sunday there are three attractive fixtures on show.
On Saturday in Headford at 2pm, Maigh Cuillinn face Tuam Stars in the Senior B decider. Tuam Stars will be buoyed by their success at u-21 level and may be keener then the Connemara men for some silverware. However if Gareth Bradshaw is in top form, it is difficult to see which Tuam player would have the engine to stop his sallies.
In Tuam on Sunday at 2pm Corofin will take on near neighbours Caherlistrane in the Senior A final. It is impossible to predict anything except a win for the Connacht club champions. Football at this time of year is all about sharpness and surely Jimmy Sice’s charges will be in better fettle than Peter Warren’s men. Corofin to finish the year off in style then, assuming they don’t take the opposition for granted and rest on their laurels.
On Sunday in Menlough at 2pm also, all conquering St Michael’s take on Glenamaddy in the intermediate final. Glen will be eager on some revenge for their championship defeat, but if Michael’s approach the game in the right frame of mind, they should be capable to replicate their previous success.
