Galway Garda 0-14
Sligo Garda 1-8
Galway Garda won their first provincial title at junior level with a hard-fought victory over their Sligo counterparts at Ballyhaunis last week.
The Galway men were in control throughout. Their defence with Jonathon Fitzmaurice, Barry Burke, and Tony Costello, was outstanding, particularly in the first half when they were under severe pressure.
Sligo, with wind advantage, were left to rue numerous squandered chances. They dominated the midfield exchanges and started brightly, going up four points after 10 minutes. Galway, however, due to the accuracy of Seamus McDonnell and Cormac Bane, gradually took control and were two points up at half-time, 0-7 to 1-02.
Galway dominated the early exchanges after the restart, inspired by some fine scores. Mark Caffery’s effort ensured they were seven up approaching the final quarter. Although Sligo refused to throw in the towel, and they produced a gallant display, they could not reel in the Galway men. Cormac Bane underlined his county class with a man of the match display, ensuring Galway captain Alan Keane received the Connacht trophy.
They now advance to the All Ireland semi-final where they will play the Ulster champions Donegal County Council.
