New book on Marxism to be launched in Charlie Byrne’s

The Point is to Change It! An Introduction to Marxist Philosophy, the new book by John Molyneux, will be launched in Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop this evening at 6pm.

Mr Molyneux is an academic and author who has written widely on politics and culture, including Anarchism: a Marxist Criticism, Will the Revolution be Televised?, and The Future Socialist Society.

In this book he sets out to defend in straightforward language the core elements of Marx’s philosophy and their application to everyday and contemporary issues such as racism, sexism, climate change, religion, and morality.

“I wanted to write a book on serious intellectual issues that would be accessible to activists, students, and working people looking for a better world,” he said. “Despite the disaster of Stalinism, Marxism remains the most powerful alternative to a capitalist system in crisis which is attacking ordinary people all over the world.”

The book has already received praise from academics. Marnie Holborow of the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies, DCU, called it “a wonderful synopsis of Marx and why he is relevant for today”. Kieran Allen, senior lecturer in sociology, UCD, said it was “an exceptionally clear and concise introduction to the Marxist world view”.

The Point is to Change It! is published by Bookmarks and costs €8. Admission is free and all are welcome.
