Gardaí deny girl was pushed into Corrib

Gardaí have denied claims made last week that a young woman who was pulled unconscious out of the River Corrib was pushed into the dangerous waters.

The young woman’s body was dragged from the waters by two fishermen and two gardaí shortly after 8pm on Thursday, just a short distance from the Salmon Weir Bridge. One of the fishermen could be seen performing resuscitation on the woman as a number of emergency services arrived on the scene. Communications overheard between the two gardaí in the canal and the gardaí on the path above confirmed that the young woman was successfully revived after a few minutes.

Numerous eyewitnesses, many of whom were en route to the Arts Festival Big Top for the highly anticipated Blondie concert, also heard gardai at the scene say that the young woman said she was pushed into the water by a male companion. Speaking to Galway First on Friday a garda spokesperson denied this was the case, calling the incident an accident. Reports claim that a security guard working for the Arts Festival saw the young woman enter the water by her own will and jumped in soon after to help save her from the rushing waters.

Gardaí did confirm that the young woman was taken to UHG as a precautionary measure and her parents had been informed shortly thereafter.
