His GAA origins may be etched in Offaly soil, but Operation Transformation winner, and Knocknacarra resident Ronan Scully has declared himself an adopted son of the Galway contingent. “I played football with Offaly where I won an All-Ireland but I’m living in Galway and I’m a huge supporter. I was at the last game and I’ll be going Sunday too. I got Galway kits for my daughters so we’re ready to go.” Scully was vocal about his faith in the Galway quest to claim temporary ownership rights of the Liam McCarthy Cup. Scully commended Anthony Cunningham for the way that he has transcended the hurling landscape in Galway. He accredited the manager with ‘galvanising’ and ‘consolidating’ the Galway outfit. Mr Scully spoke with unwavering assurance when citing these two elements as being the cause for revolutionising the competitive edge in the Galway side.
In the same breath he noted that this newly embedded sense of unity will be the prevailing factor in bringing victory for the Tribesmen on Sunday. “The Leinster final was not a flash in the pan. They have great momentum going into the replay and this year you can see that’s all about the team effort. It’s not just about Joe anymore and they just need to maintain that belief in themselves again this week.”
Ronan envisaged a liberated Galway if the win is secured on Sunday. “It would give the county a real lift and put a pep in the step. It’s all about belief. I won the Operation Transformation and believe me if I can do it then nothing is impossible. Gaillimh Abu.”
