Culture Night in Galway City Museum

Galway City Museum will celebrate Culture Night tomorrow evening with a series of short talks covering all aspects of Galway history.

At the event some of Galway’s leading historians will attempt to cover centuries of history in eight minute segments.

Starting at 5pm, Peadar O’Dowd will talk about Ancient Galway as revealed by the River Corrib, the event will finish three hours later with NUI Galway’s Caitríona Clear on Galway Women and Childbirth, 1924 - 48.

Between these two talks another 18 speakers will take to the podium: Máirín Ní Dhonnchadha (speaking on Vikings in Galway ); Nollaig Ó Muraíle (The name of Galway ); Kieran Hoare: (Galway: from seigneurial borough to royal port ); Joe Mannion (The shiring of Galway ); Padraig Lenihan (Galway 1651-52 and ); Willie Henry (Famine in Galway ); Cathal Smithy (landlords and tenants ); Tom Kenny (Woodquay ); Jackie Uí Chionna (fisheries and industry ); Geraldine Curtin (gaols ); Tadhg Foley (Wilfrid Scawen Blunt ); Conor Montague (Galway in the New Century ); Mary Clancy (Norah Barnacle ); Dara Folan (Gaelic revival in Galway ); Cormac Ó Comhraí (Galway gaol ); John Cunningham (Lord Dunkellin ); and Laura Pomeroy (Mary Devenport O’Neill ).
