A number of community projects and initiatives throughout Galway city and county are set to benefit from a funding of €38,000 which was announced this week as part of the Local Agenda 21 Environment Partnership Fund.
Minister for the Environment, Community, and Local Government, Phil Hogan, yesterday announced that projects nationwide are to receive a total of €337,000 from the Department, and €337,500 is to be provided by local authorities, bringing the total funding to €674,500 for 2012.
A total of €17,000 is to go to 13 projects throughout Galway city which include: Conservation Volunteers Galway received a total of €1,854 for the project woodland management and wildflower meadow planting in Galway city’s public areas; Eco-UNESCO received a total of €1,400 for BiodiverCITY, an environmental education programme for young people focusing on biodiversity and community engagement issues; Foroige Ballybane Traveller Youth Integration Project received €1,200 for an environmental awareness programme for young people focusing on litter, waste, reuse, composting, and sustainable living; Shantalla Community Development Company Ltd received €2,200 for the Shantalla Community Park - Allotments, which is for the development of allotments on waste ground; and Westside Resource Centre is to receive €1,400 for the Westside Community Garden Sustainable Infrastructure Project to help with the installation of a rainwater harvesting system in the local organic garden as a practical demonstration of sustainable technology.
Eleven projects throughout Galway county are to receive a total of €21,000. These include: Gairdin na Coille - Phase 2 project by Lisheenkyle National School which is to receive €2,300 for an eco school garden; €2,200 to Burrenbeo Trust Ltd for the ‘More Stories from the Burren’ project which will help support Burrenbeo’s new media output to promote environmental empathy and awareness; Abbey Community Dev Association received €1,900 for promoting and preserving Abbey’s natural heritage; Dunmore Tidy Towns received €1,900 for the Biodiversity Action Plan for Dunmore - Phase 2 which aims to enhance biodiversity and beauty of approach roads by extending the area of wild flowers; Western Traveller and Intercultural Development received €2,400 for Tuam Community Allotments, providing allotment space for people in the town and surrouding areas who would not have the opportunity and also to encourage healthy eating and exercise; and a total of €2,400 also went to Aughrim Dev Co Ltd to enhance the natural and cultural heritage of the area.
