Documentary on student’s attempts to busk in Galway to be aired next week

A 25-minute documentary, Buscáil shot by Fearghal Ó Maolagáin while studying at NUI, Galway will be broadcast on TG4 on Monday, September 10 at 8pm.

The programme charts Mr Ó Maolagáin’s progress as he attempts to earn a living as a full time busker on the mean streets of Galway. Fearghal tries every trick in the book to earn his crust while meeting with a variety of street performers from all over the world, including musicians from Russia and the Czech Republic.

Mr Ó Maolagáin researched and shot the documentary while a student with Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge where he was given an opportunity to pitch the premise of his film to TG4 commissioning editor Micheál Ó Meallaigh, who encourages students to follow the production path:

‘It is important for media students to develop a relationship with broadcasters sooner, even while in full time study rather than later. It is also very valuable to have a broadcasting credit to your CV to supplement the grade you receive at the conclusion of your study.’

Director/Presenter Fearghal Ó Maolagáin was helped during the filming of Buscáil by two undergraduate students, Eoin Ó Ceallaigh Mac Gabhann and Diarmuid Ó Mathúna who were part of the BA sa Chumarsáid.

Micheál Ó Domhnaill, a television producer with Galway based production company Fíbín and Seán Breathnach of NUI, Galway were the executive producers. Fearghal now works full time as a trainee producer with Belfast based production company Below the Radar and he still performs his music on a regular basis.

TG4 will also broadcast a repeat of Buscáil on Sunday September 16, 4.45pm
