Doubles triumph for Galway tennis youngster

Mike Clarkson, the current Galway Lawn Tennis Club champion, completed a remarkable double at Fitzwilliam last weekend. The teenager won both the boys’ u-16 doubles and mixed doubles to add to his previous victories in both events at u-12 level.

Clarkson, who is trained by Jonathan Klampe and travels to N-Zone in Malahide every Sunday for coaching with the Michael Nugent squad, reached the singles finals at the Galway Senior Open, the Leinster Junior Open, and won the Castlebar Junior Open. He also won his first ITS matches (International u-18 Competition ) this summer in Donnybrook and Rushbrooke.

Partnered by Colin McNamara from Shankill, Clarkson won the doubles 6/2 6/4, and then teamed up with Nicola Drummy, winning the mixed title 6-4 6/4. Next up for Clarkson is the challenge of defending his GLTC Club title starting on September 10.
