Steiner kindergarten to open next month

Galway’s first Steiner kindergarten will open in Knocknacarra in September. Na Blátha Craige Community Centre, on the Clybaun Road, is a purpose-built children’s facility, and from September it will host a new and exciting approach to pre-school education.

The Steiner ethos is distinctive, encouraging an innovative and creative learning environment for children. Steiner teaching methods nurture the child’s imagination and provide lively, hands-on, approaches to play. Some play methods used in a Steiner kindergarten are baking, painting, singing, music, story time, and dressing up. The Steiner year places an emphasis on the changing seasons, observing and celebrating the natural rhythms of nature. Activities take place in an unhurried fashion, allowing each child’s own need for repetition and ritual to be met. The atmosphere in the kindergarten is very calm. Toys, playthings, and art supplies are made from simple, beautiful, materials, using natural colours. In a Steiner school the day has a clear rhythm and the week has a clear rhythm.

The Steiner kindergarten will open in September, offering a morning session. The school is accepting enrolments from children between two and a half and six years. There is flexibility to enrol for full or partial weeks. It has ECCE and CCS funding and is HSE registered.
