Students and staff at Yeats’ College were celebrating yesterday after students at the college achieved excellent results. Three students of the college achieved maximum points, with six A1s. A total of 12 students achieved 590 points or more.

First-time Leaving Cert student James Hurley from Presentation Road, Galway, reached 625 points with an incredible eight As.

James, who studied the two-year Leaving Cert programme at Yeats, was delighted with his results.

“I’m really happy with my results,” he said. “The work paid off in the end and I’m hoping to study mechanical engineering in NUI Galway. The teachers were brilliant; they really pushed me to stay motivated and reach my potential.”

Among the other students who, with James, achieved six A1s and maximum points were Andrea Grealish from Carnmore Cross and Louise Craig from Sligo.

Menlo student Maeve Cahalan was thrilled to score 595 points.

“I repeated at Yeats College and found the teachers so helpful and accommodating,” she said. “They really took a personal interest. I’m very happy and am hoping to study medicine in September.”

Other students with notable results include Aisling McCarthy from Oranmore with 585 points; Stephen Killilea, also from Oranmore, who plans to study medicine with his total of 570 points; Leanne Durkan from Roscam with 585 points who plans to study physics in UCD; and Aisling Bell from Knocknacarra, who also wishes to study medicine with 575 points. Overall, the Leaving Cert class of 2012 performed superbly with more than one-third of students reaching more than 500 points.

Principal of Yeats’ College Terry Fahy congratulated his students.

“I’m absolutely thrilled and delighted that the students’ commitment and diligence has earned them such exceptional results,” he said. “I would like to wish all students well on their transition to the next stage in their lives. The results were truly phenomenal and they were well deserved given the commitment and determination exhibited by all students throughout the year.”
