Art exhibitions

ON SHOP windows in the city centre; in The Shed at the Docks, in 126, and at the Norman Villa Gallery in Salthill, is are a feast of art exhibitions to see this month.

The Norman Villa Gallery is hosting an exhibition by Mick O’Dea as part of the Galway Arts Festival. The show will feature landscapes, still life, portraiture, and nude studies. O’Dea is a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy and Aosdána. The exhibition will be officially opened this evening at 6pm and run until August 4.

Between Worlds, a group exhibition at the Galway University hospital, is also part of the arts festival. The exhibition is taking place in the University Hospital’s Arts Corridor and features work by Emmet Kierans, Seán Guinan, and Ramon Kassam. It runs until July 29.

Singing By Itself is a new joint exhibition of works by Galway’s Maeve Callanan and Roscommon’s Rita Oates. Their works will be on display in the windows of Brown Thomas, Anthony Ryan, The Camera Shop, Hanley’s Menswear, Hartmann’s, Dubray Books, The Treasure Chest, McCambridges, and Easons, until July 26.

The 126 gallery on Queen Street is organising two exhibitions, one of which takes place in The Shed at Galway Harbour, while the other is less site-specific. Both are part of the Galway Arts Festival.

Brian Loughran and Kate Howard will exhibit in The Shed. In Guillotine and Prey, Loughran plays on the viewer’s sense of expectation, with the former alluding to the seduction of dangerous close encounters, and the former seeking to evoke frustration and empathy.

In Bauen, Howard examines the spatial and architectural features of the exhibition space. She is primarily concerned with instability and alterability, construction and decay.

The Shed’s opening hours are 1pm to 6pm. The official opening is tomorrow at 7pm.

126 will also present an offsite performance by Eve Vaughan and Mitch Conlon throughout the arts festival. See www.126.ie for performance times and locations throughout the festival, or visit the gallery where you will pointed in the right direction.
