Funding approved for new Tonabrocky water reservoir

The construction of a new water reservoir at Tonabrocky, which will address the long-standing problem of supply shortages for residents, can now take place.

The Galway County Council can accept a tender of €800,000 from local company MEIC Ltd for the construction of a new facility adjacent to the existing reservoir on the Tonabrocky site, following a Government grant.

The grant of €800,000, was approved by the Minister for Environment Phil Hogan. The work will include construction of a new reservoir, associated site development, upgrading of chlorination facilities, flow metres, and other mechanical and electrical works.

The news has been welcomed by Galway West Fine Gael TD Brian Walsh who pointed out that water usage in the area was recently reported to have increased by up to 600 cubic metres per day.

“This is an extremely important infrastructural development for Galway,” he said. “It will ensure residents of areas such as Ballymoneen, Clybaun, Cappagh Road, Rahoon, Kingston, Letteragh and Ballyburke will have a reliable supply of high quality drinking water to meet their current and future needs.”
