LUKE HAINES, rightly described by Pitchfork as “an undeniably great songwriter”, who has always revelled in his outsider role, is the subject of a new documentary - Art Will Save The World.
Art Will Save The World, directed by Dubliner Niall McCann, a graduate of the Huston Film School at NUI Galway, will be shown in the Cinemobile, outside the Town Hall Theatre, this Saturday at 5pm.
Haines is one of the finest English songwriters of the past 20 years and an outspoken commentator on culture who has no time for sacred cows and takes no prisoners. He is best known as the leader of The Auteurs, with whom he made four albums - New Wave (1993 ), Now I’m A Cowboy (1994 ), After Murder Park (1996 ), and How I Learned To Love The Bootboys (1999 ). The Auteurs also received acclaim for the singles ‘Showgirl’ and ‘Lenny Valentino’.
Haines also created the concept band and album Baader Meinhof, exploring themes of terrorism and politics. He won further plaudits with the band Black Box Recorder and has, in more recent years, divided his time between releasing solo albums, and penning two volumes of memoirs - Bad Vibes and Post Everything.
The film features interviews with Luke, and contributions from Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker, novelist David Peace, and Ft Red co-creator Arthur Matthews, discussing the work, legacy, struggles, battles, and future of Haines himself.
