Man injured in Aran ferry accident dies

A man injured in a fall on an Aran Islands ferry over the weekend has died from his injuries.

The 73-year-old, named locally as James McClean from Renmore, died at University Hospital Galway in the early hours of Tuesday, July 3.

The accident occured at around 11.30am on Sunday July 1. Mr McClean had been working on the Ceoil na Farraige ferry, at Kilronan pier on Inishmore, when he reportedly fell

on a stairwell.

Valentia Coast Guard received a call for assistance and dispatched a rescue helicopter from Shannon. The helicopter arrived at the scene at around 12.15pm and Mr McClean received treatment for a serious head injury from a GP at the scene. However he was airlifted to UHG just before 1pm, and was said to be in a critical condition.

He died from his injuries at the hospital on Tuesday morning
